The Solid Waste Research Group work on ‘Waste-to-energy potential in the Western Province of Saudi Arabia’ is been highlighted and praised in Makkah Newspaper on 25th of April. Dr. Abdul-Sattar Nizami have presented 3 different scenarios for electricity production in three major cities of Western province such as Makkah, Jeddah and Medina using municipal solid waste. The scenarios were: Mass Burn, Mass Burn with Recycling, and Refused Derived Fuel (RDF) with Biogas production (Anaerobic Digestion) and forecasted up to year 2032. The results show that Jeddah has the potential to produce about 180 MW of electricity based on incineration scenario; about 11.25MW based on incineration with recycling scenario; and about 87.3 MW based RDF with biomethanation scenario by the year 2032.
