Abstract
:
Electronic cigarette (e-Cigarette) is a device initially marketed as an assistant product to quit smoking or limit its use. Recent studies suggest the opposite and consider it as a product that lacks monitoring and laws on e-cigarettes that include sufficient quality and safety for the user. Adding flavoring agents to an e-cigarette has increased its marketing and spread even among nonsmokers, although, the Flavor Extract Manufacturers Association (FEMA) has indicated that they are used under specific concentrations and controls in foods, but not through exposure to heating using e-cigarettes and inhalation. Studies indicated the free-nicotine e-liquids aerosols inhalation causes cytotoxicity to different cells and leads to oxidative stress, DNA damage, and apoptosis. Apoptosis is an organized and natural process that occurs by activating a group of caspase enzymes, including pro-apoptotic caspase-3 (CASP3) protein. The results of this study indicate that aerosol of the subtle cinnamon flavor e-liquid and free nicotine causes an imbalanced expression of CASP3 regularity in the neural retina development at embryonic day (E9) and (E17). Hematoxylin and eosin stained sections of treated chick embryo showed marked multifocal structural changes. Many cells in the ganglion cell layer, inner nuclear layer, and outer nuclear layer showed dark pyknotic nuclei. The fact that cell death was evident and abundant in E9 and E17 leads to the conclusion that treatment with flavor vapor condensate led to neuronal cell death, which might reveals a potential risk to e-cigarette users when inhaling vapors. More investigation is needed to assess the vapor effect through different routes of administration.
