The study aimed at identifying the impact of innovation strategies on the knowledge-based economy at the Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) by determining the impact of ‘human resource management strategy, experimentation strategy, technical innovation strategy, Blue Ocean Strategy, research and development strategy, process re-engineering strategy, benchmarking strategy, and innovation marketing strategy’ on the elements of the knowledge-based economy (i.e. human capital, structural capital, customer capital, knowledge acquisition, knowledge production, knowledge sharing, and knowledge application) in three innovation centers affiliated to SABIC. The centers involved in this study are SABIC Technology Center in Riyadh, SABIC Plastic Applications Development Center at King Saud University, and SABIC Center for Research and Innovation at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology. To achieve the objectives of the study, the case study method was used to identify the extent of the application of innovation strategies and their impact on the knowledge-based economy within SABIC, and also the comparative method was used to compare between the innovation centers of SABIC regarding the determination of the impact of innovation strategies on the knowledge-based economy and the strategies that most affect the knowledge-based economy within these three centers. Regarding data collection, the study relied on a scientific questionnaire that served as the main tool for collecting data from a sample consisting of 178 employees. Accordingly, the study has arrived at a number of findings, the most important of which is that the innovation strategies are applied in SABIC with a percentage of 75.13%. The study has also proved the existence of an impact of innovation strategies on the knowledge-based economy in all the centers of SABIC at a percentage of 77.3%. Furthermore, it turns out that the innovation strategy most influencing the knowledge-based economy in all innovation centers is the research and development strategy. Besides, SABIC Plastic Applications Development Center at King Saud University obtained the highest percentage regarding the existence of an impact of innovation strategies on the knowledge-based economy with a percentage of 80.3%, followed by SABIC Center for Research and Innovation at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology with a percentage of 75.7%, then lastly came SABIC Technology Center in Riyadh with a percentage of 72.7%. Finally, the study presented several recommendations, the most important of which are: setting a development plant to apply the innovation strategies in line with the general strategy of SABIC and its objectives, paying attention and focus on research and development strategy through preparing a strategic plan supported by clear and specific schemes and policies, and working to overcome obstacles that may prevent the application of innovation and its influencing strategies on the knowledge-based economy. |
