Abstract
:
In our contemporary connected world, English rules as the language of technology and interaction in many fields. English invaded the world where it has assumed a fatal role as official/co-official or second language in many countries. In many other cases it is still recognized and play a role as a foreign language incorporated into the educational systems for other countries. The scope of contact gave birth to different varieties of English called World Englishes. In Saudi Arabia, English holds high status in many fields as a medium of interaction and is taught as a foreign language. This contact gave birth to a local Saudi variety. This study investigates the features of Saudi English variety in the Saudi comedy club. The study also measured the findings against Saudi English’s literature in an effort to link it to the phenomenon of English as a lingua franca and find varieties which are exclusively related to the Saudi context. 33 episodes made by 14 performers were used to conduct a qualitative thematic analysis using NVivo software. The episodes were reviewed many times to identify categories and were reviewed again to classify variations within the content. When an instance was identified, it was highlighted and assigned to a single or multiple category/ies. The instances were reviewed once more to analyze the content and extract information that could related to Saudi English. Data was collected from several sources using research services provided by Google, Yahoo and YouTube. The findings concurred with the literature and showed some features which can be related exclusively to the Saudi variety such as the unconcealable effects of the Hijazi accent on utterances made by well-educated and native-like performers. Keywords: World Englishes, Saudi English, English as a Lingua Franca, Stand-up comedy.
