Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) is one of the most commonly used additives and flavor enhancers though with negative impacts.
Pomegranate Peel extract (PPE) was medically used for treating diseases thanks to its anti-oxidants.
This study aims to investigate the MSG impact on having congenital malformations and histological effect in liver and evaluate PPE protective and therapeutic role in protection against effect on the early stages of chick embryos.
To this aim, 720 eggs were equally divided into 6 groups injected in the air space. The first four groups were injected in the days (0-1), the control was treated by a distilled water under a dose of 0.1 ml/egg, PPE group by a dose of 0.3 ml/egg, MSG group by a dose of 0.1 ml/egg, mixed group by a dose of 0.1+0.3 ml/egg, the protective group by PPE dose of 0.3 ml/egg in the days (0-1) then by MSG dose of 0.1 ml/egg in the days (3-4) and the therapeutic group was treated by MSG dose of 0.1 ml/egg in the days (0-1) then by PPE dose of 0.3 ml/egg in the days (3-4). Eggs were opened at the ages of (7-10-12-14-16) days to have embryos and identify the mortality rate.
Morphological studies revealed congenital malformations such as dysmorphism of embryos, extremes malformation, abdomen organomegaly and herniation, disappearance of eye and subcutaneous bleeding. Morphometric studies revealed significant shortage in height and weight of embryos except for the weight of 7 days embryos among all groups. Significant decrease in length of the neck except for those (PPE, PPE-MSG, MSG-PPE) of 10 days age, significant decrease in length of the beak among the (MSG+PPE, MSG) except for other groups at all ages, significant increase in diameter of eye among (MSG, MSG+PPE) at age of (7-10) days except for other groups, at ages of (12-14) significant decrease occurred to diameter of eye except for PPE, at age of (16)days significant decrease occurred to diameter of eye except for (PPE, PPE-MSG), decrease in the weight of liver for MSG associated with significant decrease in thickness of hepatic cells.
Histological studies revealed discrepancies in thickness of lymphatic capsule, narrowness or wideness of the area of blood sinusoid, separation of endothelial cells, degenerative changes included psychosis, karyolitic, focal necrosis, apoptotic cells, hematological congestion and liver cirrhosis, MSG was the most one to damage, MSG+PPE came in second and MSG-PPE came in third.
In conclusion, the MSG was an unhealthy choice that negatively affecting cells and tissues. However, natural products such as Pomegranate provides protection to the cells, recovers the missing and contributes to minimize the risks of having diseases. |
