Abstract
:
PURPOSE: Understanding the factors that affect faculty’s research productivity can improve the number and quality of published researches. Therefore, the aims of the study were: 1) To conduct an exploratory factor analysis on the Bland et al. questionnaire to understand how their items are grouped together, 2) To perform regression analysis to understand how factors from Bland et al. questionnaire and individual factors relate to productivity, and 3) To understand what facilitates faculty research productivity in King Abdulaziz University, Faculty of Dentistry (KAUFD). METHODS: This is an observational study conducted at KAUFD from November 2015 to February 2016. Ethical approval was obtained from KAUFD (#020-15). A self-administered questionnaire modified from the Bland model was emailed to all full time assistant and associate professors working at KAUFD. Two main sets of statistical analyses were run, exploratory factor analysis and Regression analysis. RESULTS: Out of 106 faculty, 98 participants responded, for a response rate of 92.5%. Within this sample, “individual research orientation & skill” factor was found to be a predictor of our faculty’s research productivity. Also, rank and research working hours were found to be individual predictors of research productivity. CONCLUSION: KAUFD should invest more in faculty skill’s development and enhancement to increase research productivity.
