Abstract
:
This study deals with the activities of the Jewish Agency in Aden, Yemen between 1922 and 1950. The importance of this topic comes from being unconcentrated upon by previous studies done in this field. It aims at shedding direct lights on the Zionist activities in Aden at that period and unveiling the various tools and methods adopted by the Agency to convince Yemeni to migrate to Palestine; activities that eventually proved to be successful. The study previews the public Jewish life in Yemen with all its religious, social, economical and political features; and examines the nature of the relationship between the Jews of Yemen and the rest of the inhabitants as well as their relationship with the local authorities; and assesses the amount of freedom they enjoyed in terms of faith and judicial prosecution. The study covers all the activities of the Agency since the first contact with the Jews of Yemen up to achieving its goals of convincing them to migrate to Palestine as the first Arab Jews migrants from the Arab World. The study traces the issue of migration of the Jews of Yemen in all its stages. The first stage covers the period that proceeded the activities of the Agency, from 1881 to 1920. The second stage, which covers the period that coincided with the activities of the Agency, is divided into two sub-stages: the first one covers from 1921 through 1947, and the second one constitutes the grand mass migration time which extends from 1948 to 1950 and which is marked by the operation of '' The Magic Carpet''. The study also highlights the role the British authorities in Aden played to facilitate the Zionist activities there. The role was obvious not only in their allowing camps to be built in Aden for gathering the Jews from all parts of Yemen in preparation for deporting them to Palestine but also in financing those camps. The study sheds heights on the situation of those camps inside which the Jews were packed waiting for departure to Palestine. It also puts under discussion the 1947 disturbances in Aden and the consequent laws that facilitated the process of mass migration from Aden to Palestine including the operation of ''The Magic Carpet'' and the mutual co-operation between the British Authorities and the Jewish Agency in preparing for and conducting that operation. The study ends with a conclusion stating that the migration of Yemeni Jews from Yemen to Palestine was never a result of religious, political or social oppression. Instead, it was a product of the intensive consistent activities of the Jewish Agency combined with a British policy in Aden supporting for those activities.
