Abstract
:
The present study was carried out to determine the level of AST enzyme in GCF in heroin addicts. Two groups of individuals were selected: -20 male addicts. -10 subjects of the comparable age and sex served as a control group. All subjects were examined clinically for: 1-Oral hygiene condition (Plaque index). 2-Gingival inflammation (Gingival index). 3-Pocket depth. 4-Attachment loss. 5-Alveolar bone loss scores. Gingival fluid samples were taken from all the subjects, using filter paper strip for determination of AST level according to the method of Bergmeyer et al. Results of the present study revealed that no significant difference in plaque index between addicts and the control group, while significant increase in gingival inflammation, pocket depth, attachment loss and alveolar bone loss scores in addicts. Also a significant increase in AST in GCF in addicts was observed. From the results we can conclude the followings: 1-There is marked periodontal destruction among addicts which may be mainly due to the immunological disturbances and abnormalities. 2-Analysis of GCF for AST level, was a reliable diagnostic marker for detection and severity of periodontal destruction among addicts.
